Quick Answer
The rally leader and joiners have different jobs. In the classic rally system, the leader supplies the core combat-stat setup and eligible joiner captain skills add rally benefits. Joiners also supply troops, and their heroes can increase the number they can send.
Later systems add role-dependent effects from aircraft, vehicles, research and other progression. “Only the leader matters” is therefore too broad. Inspect the active Rally Benefits and the conditions on each feature instead of assuming every personal bonus transfers, or that none does.
What Each Role Contributes
| Contribution | Leader's job | Joiner's job |
|---|---|---|
| Main combat setup | Bring a suitable developed hero lineup and relevant combat bonuses | Follow the requested captain and troop instructions |
| Troops | Set a rally appropriate to the target and available attendance | Supply useful types and tiers within personal march capacity |
| Joiner hero skills | Inspect the rally's active benefit selection | Put the requested eligible hero in the captain position |
| Modern support effects | Equip and coordinate features with leader conditions | Check effects that explicitly apply to joining or allied troops |
| Timing | Leave time for members to arrive | Arrive before departure and report shortages early |
Treat this as a role map, not a universal stacking formula. A solo-march statistic, a rally-wide effect and a bonus restricted to one feature can all be displayed on the same account while applying differently in battle.
Why Send Three Heroes as a Joiner?
Even when only your captain's eligible skill is considered for a particular rally benefit, the other heroes can still contribute to your personal march capacity. Sending only one hero because you expect only one skill to count may leave useful troops at home.
Try a safe comparison in the march preparation screen: select the requested captain, note your capacity, then add suitable secondary heroes and compare it again. Do not launch an attack merely to test the number. Check the actual troop count before saving the preset.
The same logic explains why a Training Area change can affect a joining march. The shared level may change your capacity even though it does not upgrade the hero's rank or skills. See Hero Training Area and resets before dismantling an instructor setup immediately before an event.
Check Which Captain Skills Are Active
Older rally discussions commonly describe four contributing joiner captain skills, but disagree about “first four” versus strongest eligible skills and replacement priority. Do not use arrival order as proof that your skill is active in the current rally.
Instead:
- Join with the captain and formation requested by the caller.
- Open the rally's benefits or detail panel before departure.
- Find the active hero-skill entries and their contributing heroes or members where shown.
- Compare that list after another member joins if you need to understand a replacement.
- Ask the caller to adjust an unsuitable contribution while there is still time.
This answers the useful question: what is active in this rally? It avoids turning a disputed old selection rule into a permanent rule for every state and event. Do not infer an exact stacking percentage from similar-looking skill text; use displayed effects and comparable reports.
Your March Capacity Is Not the Rally's Total Capacity
Suppose the rally has room for one million troops but your joining march can send only 80,000. Increasing the leader's total rally room does not automatically let your account send 100,000. Your own heroes and march-capacity progression still limit that contribution.
Conversely, a large personal march may not fit if earlier joiners have filled most of the rally. Check both numbers before deciding a capacity upgrade is broken.
For several concurrent rallies, also check available march slots, heroes already deployed and troop availability. A preset saved at full strength can send fewer troops after earlier marches consume the same troop type. The formation guide helps plan usable presets rather than just attractive percentages.
Why Old Gear Advice Can Be Incomplete
Classic advice about leader stats should not be extended to every later feature. Aircraft systems, for example, distinguish effects for a rally leader or garrison commander from effects for a participant joining a rally or garrison. Read the role condition before deciding an upgrade helps your job.
War Vehicle rules introduced another shared layer: the highest-Power vehicle of a type can supply the main skill, with the participating vehicles of that type affecting its amplification. That does not mean every joiner's whole vehicle profile is copied unchanged to all troops.
The practical question is therefore “which effect applies, to whom, and under what condition?” Review aircraft and War Vehicles and Special Forces Engine alongside hero choices. Avoid expensive upgrades justified only by a years-old statement that all joiner progression is irrelevant.
Save Different Presets for Different Jobs
Keep separate leader and joining setups where the game allows them. A leader preset may reserve your strongest suitable trio, while a joining preset follows a particular captain request and maximizes useful troop contribution.
Also separate the target. A hunter-heavy Influencer Trap formation serves a PvE damage goal; it is not automatically appropriate for a contested Fortress garrison. Infantry-heavy defensive instructions should not silently overwrite your Trap preset either.
For a controlled comparison, record the target, leader, participating troops, active benefits and relevant buffs. Change one thing and repeat under similar conditions. A single higher damage report after changing three heroes, a vehicle and troop count cannot isolate which change helped.
FAQ
Do my second and third heroes matter when I join? They can raise personal march capacity even when their skills are not selected as rally-wide benefits. Check the preparation screen before dropping them.
Do the first four people always provide the skills? Do not assume that from old discussions. Inspect the current rally's active benefit list; selection and replacement claims in historical guides are inconsistent.
Does more rally capacity mean I can send more troops? Only if your personal march limit and available troops also allow it. Combined rally room and individual march capacity are separate limits.
Is upgrading anything on a joiner pointless? No. Troops, capacity and explicitly applicable participant effects can matter. Read each feature's conditions before deciding its value.
Key Takeaways
- Match the preset to your role and the target.
- Verify active rally benefits rather than assuming every displayed skill counts.
- Check personal capacity, combined capacity and modern support effects separately.
