How many heroes should I focus on in State of Survival?

Three as a core, plus one gathering hero. Past that you're diluting fragments.

What are hero generations?

Groups of heroes that unlock as your state ages. Later generations have higher base stats; a new state opens with the early ones and unlocks more on a schedule.

Which troop type is best?

None dominates. Infantry beat Riders, Riders beat Hunters, Hunters beat Infantry. Pick one to specialise in and build heroes to match.

Are collab heroes worth it?

They're generally comparable to same-generation heroes rather than better. The collab guide goes into it.

What's the difference between fragments and badges?

Fragments are hero-specific and gate unlocking and starring up. Badges are general and used for levelling. Fragments are the real bottleneck.

Should I keep my starting heroes?

Yes, through the early game. They carry you until later generations unlock. Stop investing heavily once better options are available.

Which skill do I upgrade first?

Usually the first skill, which tends to carry the headline effect. Check the hero, since some are exceptions.
